Frequently Asked Questions

How did the Salem Community Activities Center come to be?

  • The Gift of Class
The original high school building in Salem, which was built in 1915, was auctioned by the school board on the courthouse steps in late-1970's. Thelma Bailey, a member of the community bought the school with the intent of turning it into a community center. She spent $25,000 to acquire the building and in excess of $250,000 for essential renovations necessary to convert the school to a community center.

  • The Community Activities Center Became A Reality
In 1981, the Salem Community Activities Center, Inc., opened. The Center operates as a non-for-profit organization with 501 (c)(3) designation. The Center has been able to stabilize and maintain a budget in the black over the years.
